Do pasture raised chickens only eat grass? Most people think pasture-raised chickens survive by eating grass and bugs alone. The reality? More than 95% of the chicken in your grocery store comes from Cornish Cross birds. Through decades of selective breeding, these chickens have been developed to grow incredibly fast going from hatch to harvest in just 6–8 weeks. Even though most pasture raised operations use a heritage breer that’s better suited to foraging and the outdoors, they’re still not able to get all the nutrients that need SOLELY from the pasture to put on meat. Muscle growth takes a lot of energy, which is why even pasture-raised chickens are typically provided a balanced feed ration. The pasture gives them access to fresh forage, insects, sunshine, and room to roam, but it isn’t enough by itself to support the nutritional needs of modern broiler chickens. #ChickenFacts #PastureRaised #Broiler #Educational #shilohfarm
