If you’re eating clean, tracking your protein, showing up for your workouts, and the scale still won’t move, I want you to look at something most people never think to check: your sleep.

Here’s what’s actually happening. One bad night of sleep raises your cortisol and drops your insulin sensitivity the very next day. That means your body holds onto fat more easily and stores more of what you eat, even when you’re doing everything “right.” On top of that, poor sleep throws your hunger hormones completely off. Ghrelin (the one that says “eat”) goes up, leptin (the one that says “you’re full”) goes down. So you wake up hungrier, you crave carbs and sugar harder, and you have less willpower to fight it. That’s not a discipline problem. That’s biology.

And here’s the part that hits especially hard in your 40s and through perimenopause: your sleep is already getting more fragile thanks to shifting hormones, and your body is already more sensitive to cortisol and blood sugar swings. So the same poor sleep that you could “get away with” in your 30s now quietly sabotages every other healthy thing you’re doing.

This is why I tell my clients to stop chasing a stricter diet and start protecting their sleep first. It is the foundation everything else is built on, not the thing you get to last.
