Today, we are crowning entrepreneur and founder of Lesbians Who Tech, Leanne Pittsford, as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

Born and raised in San Diego, CA, Pittsford later moved to San Luis Obispo to study political science at California Polytechnic State University. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree and went on to earn a master’s degree in equity and social justice in education from San Francisco State University. After graduating, Pittsford began her career working for Equality California where she was involved in the fight to overturn Proposition 8, which sought to ban same-sex marriage in the state. It was during her time there that she discovered a passion for tech while managing data and learning to build online fundraising tools for the organization. She went on to found the Lesbian Entrepreneur Mentoring Program and Start Somewhere, a design and technology agency centered on helping nonprofit organizations and social enterprises. 

In 2012, Pittsford founded Lesbians Who Tech (LWT) with the goal of creating more networking opportunities and increasing visibility for lesbians and queer women. LWT is now the largest LGBTQ+ technology community in the world and has grown from 30 people in 2012 to over 70,000 LGBTQ+ women, non-binary people, queer women of color, and allies across more than 100 countries. 

LWT empowers women, women of color, and nonbinary leaders in tech, business, and culture through scholarships, including the Edie Windsor Coding Scholarship Fund for non-binary and LGBTQ+ women, mentorship programs, and the SQUAD Leadership Program dedicated to supporting members as they move into senior leadership roles. For her work, Business Insider named Pittsford one of the most powerful LGBTQ+ people in tech, and she received the Human Rights Campaign Equality Award in 2023.
