A Friendship That Led to Courtside at the Finals

Over the past year, a genuine friendship has grown between Walt Frazier and me, sparked by his appearance at our Stew Leonard’s store in Yonkers, New York. What started as a single store appearance turned into an ongoing connection — we kept in touch, talking about everything from the Knicks to his love of gardening and fresh, healthy eating. Walt’s always been curious about new foods, and we’d send him items from Stew’s to try, knowing his appreciation for fresh, quality ingredients.

Then, on the day of Game 3 of the NBA Finals, my phone rang — and it was Walt. At first, I figured he just wanted to chat about the game and share his thoughts on how it might play out. But the conversation took an unexpected turn when he asked if I was free and could make it to Madison Square Garden. I honestly thought he was joking at first. Once I realized he was serious, I scrambled to rearrange my schedule so I could be there.

What I didn’t know was that the ticket he set aside for me was right next to his — on the court. It was a surreal, once-in-a-lifetime experience I never imagined I’d have.

While there, I wore a Stew Leonard’s hoodie, which ended up being broadcast on TV across the country — a proud moment for the family business. But more than anything, this was about a friendship built on shared interests, conversation, and mutual respect — and a night at the Garden I’ll never forget.
