Hot take from an exclusively breastfeeding twin mama who has never once tracked a feed:

What a pump extracts and what your baby extracts are not the same measurement.

A baby’s suck is stronger, more efficient, and more precisely calibrated to your body than any machine ever made. Your pump showing you two ounces does not mean your baby is only getting two ounces. It means your pump got two ounces.

I feel like new moms are often told to supplement because nobody can see what’s going in. And I get it. But for many women, that advice starts a spiral: supplementing reduces demand, demand reduction affects supply, and suddenly you’re exclusively pumping or formula feeding not because your body couldn’t do it, but because nobody gave it the chance.

Here’s what I trust instead:

Is my baby growing?
Is my baby gaining weight?
Does my baby seem satisfied after feeds?

Yes. Yes. And yes.

So I don’t track how long they feed. Sometimes it’s ten minutes and they want more two minutes later. Sometimes it’s thirty minutes and that’s enough. Sometimes it’s thirty minutes and it’s not. I follow them, not a clock. And yes, feeding on demand — especially those first few months — usually means nursing for many of the hours in a 24-hour period. 

My body grew five babies. I trust it to feed two.

This is not me telling you what to do. This is me telling you what’s possible so that if your body is capable and your babies are thriving, you feel empowered to trust that before you’re talked out of it.
