After the Boston Red Sox early season struggles, Chad Epperson has stepped into the interim head coach role and is now the Red Sox Manager. And let’s just say that he has not eased into his interim role quietly. He has made a big splash in the league.

Before becoming manager, Epperson was a third base coach under Alex Cora. Epperson caught the eyes of MLB fans instantly, especially in a recent game against the Baltimore Orioles when he stepped onto the infield grass to wave home a runner around third base — an image captured here that is so bizarre that baseball fans in the stands and watching at home on their television performed a collective double take.

As unusual as it looked, the move is technically within the rules of the MLB rulebook and is deemed legal. As long as a coach doesn’t physically get in the way of a fielder, the positioning is legal. Still, nobody expected to see it and it was very eye opening. I thought it was illegal until I saw it and looked into it a bit more for this post.

This infield moment is just the latest chapter in what has become an absolutely wild and entertaining stretch for Chad Epperson since his sudden jump from managing the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs to coaching on a Major League staff.

The scrutiny was already building before this newest scandal, as there is a lot more that might come in future posts to follow. Maybe it is viewed as bold and what the baseball club needs, or maybe it can be viewed as reckless. For better or for worse, Epperson has made third base coaching must-watch television, which sports fans can’t really complain about. The Red Sox needed to take a risk after Red Sox fans wanted a change, and it seems like it is paying off.
