The Washington Mystics are the youngest team in the WNBA, but through the early part of the season, they’ve already shown they can compete.

Washington delivered a competitive performance from start to finish. The Mystics led after the first quarter, stayed within striking distance throughout the game, and pushed New York into overtime.

That performance reflected more than just the final score. A young roster still adjusting to the pace and demands of the professional level went toe-to-toe with one of the league’s most established teams and consistently responded to every challenge.

Kiki Iriafen ( kikiiriafen )led the way with a double-double, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Shakira Austin ( curlyhead_kira )added a double-double of her own with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sonia Citron ( soniacitron ) also contributed 17 points in the effort.

In her first home game wearing a Mystics jersey, Georgia Amoore ( georgiaamoore ) played 21 minutes and finished with 7 points while continuing to settle into Washington’s young backcourt rotation.

Washington’s rookie group continued to gain valuable experience throughout the night. Lauren Betts ( laurenmariebetts ) played 18 minutes and finished with 7 points, while Angela Dugalic (angeladugalic ) added 5 points in 10 minutes. Cassandre Prosper (cassprosper ) logged 27 minutes and scored 8 points, and Rori Harmon ( roriharmon ) contributed 3 points across 22 minutes.

Youth in basketball is often associated with patience and long-term development. Early on, though, Washington is showing signs of growth while remaining competitive in the present. Through two games, the Mystics have demonstrated composure, energy, and the ability to compete with veteran teams.
