Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk commented on the hydration breaks newly introduced to this year’s World Cup, questioning whether they’re always necessary and bemoaning the opportunity to play commercials. ⁣
⁣
“Every time going to a commercial is a bit… not really what I like,” said Van Dijk. “I think also think for the neutral watchers on TV it’s also not great.” ⁣
The newly introduced drinks breaks – midway through each half – have drawn criticism, with some saying the 3-minute delays are an often unnecessary excuse to show more ads.⁣
⁣
The Liverpool defender acknowledged that sometimes they’re medically necessary, when games take place outdoors in hot places – although they have also taken place at air-conditioned indoor stadiums. ⁣
⁣
“If it’s really hot it would be good to put them in,” he acknowledged, “but you have to look at it in every game separately in my opinion.” ⁣
⁣
So do YOU think they’re for safety, or for advertisers?⁣
