Paget-Schroetter Syndrome and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

- [ ] Happens in mostly young athletes.
- [ ] More males than females
- [ ] Rare
- [ ] Occurs after vigorous upper body activities (possibly rowing) - and in general a tight anatomical make where muscle, scar tissue, your rib, compress your subclavian vein overtime and cause a blood clot. I wanted to note I got the booster shot as well on 12/29. Whether that’s validated to have affected my blood clot will be in future studies. My vein was 98% blocked by a clot from repetitive use of my upper arm.

Surgery
⠀
6  hour procedure with 4 surgeons. One of the most complex surgeries ever “quoted by one of the vascular surgeons”

•Rib OUT
•Anterior scalene OUT
•Subclavian muscle OUT
•Vein repair (vein graft from my groin)
•Removal of scar tissue from the vein
•Sternocleidomastoid cut and reattached (huge next muscle)

2-4 days in the hospital

1. I fainted on a nurse after walking 100 ft due to fluid shifts in my body (scary) she caught me and held me until she screamed for another nurse. Apparently I walked too fast too soon after surgery.
2. I was in a lot of pain in my chest.
3. There are a lot of nerves where they operated so I asked for a nerve block but they did not give me one because they wanted to make sure my arm was working 😂 fair.
4. I had a chest tube to drain all the fluid and trauma to the area, that was one of the most painful and irritating things but it keeps your lung from collapsing.
5. They took chest x rays and determined it was safe enough to pull the tube after 2 days (it goes through your ribs into your lungs.
