🍦 Did you know America’s favorite summer sound was born right here in Philly? 🍦

Mister Softee got its start in 1956, when brothers William and James Conway began selling green-colored ice cream out of their first truck on St. Patrick’s Day, charging just 10 cents a cone in West Philadelphia. What started as a single truck rolling through Philly streets grew into the most recognizable ice cream brand in the country.

But Mister Softee isn’t just a Philly original because of the ice cream — the jingle is too. The tune, officially titled “Jingle and Chimes,” was written in 1960 by Philadelphian ad man Les Waas — a local legend who wrote and produced more than 970 jingles over his five-decade career, with this one becoming his lasting legacy. 

Decades later, that same melody still does exactly what it was made to do: it signals the truck’s approach and turns into an instantly recognizable craving before you even see it coming. It’s become a lasting part of the collective American childhood — proof that two ideas born in Philadelphia didn’t just become a business, they became a sound, a memory, and a piece of summer itself. 

From a West Philly garage to ice cream trucks across the country — Mister Softee and its jingle are 100% Philadelphia-made. 🇺🇸☀️
