A 22-year-old broke the internet's biggest paywall. 

Alone.

Alexandra Elbakyan grew up in Kazakhstan, taught herself to code at 12, and kept hitting the same wall as a graduate student — scientific journals charging $30 to $50 to read a single paper. 

Scientists who wrote the research often couldn't afford to read their own work.

So in 2011, in three days, she wrote a program that bypassed every paywall at once. She called it Sci-Hub. She never charged a cent.

Today it holds 88 million papers — up to 95% of all paywalled research on Earth. Publishers won a $15 million court judgment against her. Governments blocked the site country by country. It kept coming back.

Then she went further. She put an AI on top of all 88 million papers. 

Ask it anything in plain English — it searches the entire library, writes a full answer, and cites every source.

She didn't just unlock the library. She handed everyone a key and taught them how to use it.

And in 2016, Nature — one of the most powerful journals she was taking from — named her one of the ten most influential people in science.

The establishment she was robbing gave her an award.
