OMAHA, Neb. — Every successful team seems to have a unique tradition.

For Georgia baseball, that tradition comes in the form of a sour candy.

The Bulldogs have embraced a dugout ritual known as "Sour Power," a team tradition that began during a road trip to Mississippi State and has followed them all the way to the Men's College World Series.

The idea started with Georgia player Bryce Callaway during a stop at Buc-ee's while traveling to Starkville earlier this season.

Callaway bought a bag of Sour Power candy, and teammates began handing it out after hits, runs and other positive moments during games.

The Bulldogs proceeded to sweep Mississippi State on the road.

The tradition stuck.

"We went on to sweep Mississippi State, and we were rolling ever since then," Georgia outfielder Scott Newman said. "So it's stuck."

As Georgia's season continued, Sour Power became more than a snack.

The team embraced the tradition by creating themed arm sleeves, headbands and other accessories, turning it into a symbol of the Bulldogs' chemistry and togetherness.

"This is easily the closest team that I think most of us have been a part of," Newman said.

Newman has become one of the leaders of the ritual, helping distribute candy throughout the dugout after positive plays.

"Everyone loves to have a ton of fun," Newman said. "It's the closest team we've got, and Sour Power is just a little thing that the team does together."

The tradition has become so important that Georgia packed dozens of boxes of Sour Power before traveling to Omaha.

Any time a player contributes — whether through a hit, sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly or run scored — candy is waiting when he returns to the dugout.

"Any time somebody comes into the dugout after something positive, you get a Sour Power," Newman explained.

The ritual has become a visible part of Georgia's College World Series experience, often catching the attention of television cameras and opposing fans alike.

While the candy itself may seem insignificant, players say it represents something much bigger.

Team chemistry.

The Bulldogs believe the tradition helps reinforce the close-knit culture that has fueled their run to Omaha.

And if Georgia continues winning, expect plenty more Sour Power to be handed out before the College World Series is over.
