Amid all the news about the raid on the Mexican Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) Cartel compound—and death of cartel leader Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho”—is confirmation that the U.S. provided intelligence and targeting assistance—but one outlet is also reporting that U.S. special operators may have provided direct (training) assistance. According to journalists at Breitbart Texas, instructors from the United States Navy SEALs traveled to Mexico after the Senate approved foreign special forces training missions, providing key instruction to an elite Mexican Army unit focused on apprehending senior cartel figures.

Operational security was understandably tight—with phones confiscated and comms blocked to prevent leaks that had previously compromised efforts to capture high-value targets. Working from shared U.S.–Mexican intelligence, forces tracked El Mencho to Tlapalpa, Jalisco, and launched an assault intended to capture him alive. Instead, a fierce firefight with CJNG gunmen resulted in 4 killed & 3 critically wounded; authorities say one of the dead was El Mencho himself.

The aftermath triggered cartel retaliation across Mexico—vehicle hijackings, burning barricades, and coordinated intimidation campaigns to disrupt airports, highways and government operations across multiple states.
