Airspace over El Paso, Texas, was abruptly shut down last night after the FAA issued “temporary flight restrictions for special security reasons,” grounding all commercial, cargo, and general aviation traffic at El Paso International Airport and the surrounding area. Flights were initially halted for “up to 10 days” before the restriction was suddenly lifted hours later.

While early public statements cited a “cartel drone incursion,” multiple outlets later reported the Department of War was testing counter-drone tech, including an unknown high-energy laser system. Officials reportedly feared the laser could pose risks to civilian aircraft operating nearby. During the supposed tests, at least one suspected aerial threat was identified....it later turned out to be a mylar balloon.

In previous statements, the administration claimed that military personnel disabled Mexican cartel drones that crossed into U.S. airspace, and the threat was “neutralized.” This has not been independently confirmed...it’s unknown if there was indeed a cartel drone AND a laser countermeasure...or if the whole thing was just a cover story for the weapons test.
