New details have emerged regarding the incident this past weekend in central Syria, where two U.S. service members and one American civilian (interpreter) were killed during a terrorist attack near Palmyra. Three additional U.S. personnel were wounded and are receiving medical care, while several Syrian security members were also injured.

According to U.S. Central Command, the attack occurred during a joint engagement with Syrian partner forces when the assailant opened fire on a convoy before being killed at the scene. USCENTCOM investigators have attributed the attack to the Islamic State...raising concerns of the threat of still-active ISIS sleeper cells in the region.

As more information comes to light, multiple reports indicate the attacker may have been embedded with Syrian security forces at the time—operating as an apparent “ally” while allegedly maintaining ties to ISIS. Syrian authorities acknowledged the individual had been under internal review for suspected extremist sympathies, with steps underway to remove him from service prior to the attack. Those actions were not completed in time, and several individuals connected to the unit have reportedly been detained as the investigation continues...in fact, five people were arrested today in connection to the attack.

U.S. political and military officials have condemned the attack and vowed accountability for those responsible.  It’s unknown if that will mean additional troop presence in Syria, or just rhetoric...but it’s likely that we’ll see some sort of new anti-ISIS operations in the region soon.
