For the first time in more than 25 years, U.S. ground forces are back in Panama for full-scale jungle warfare training—reviving a historic mission at a location once known as the “Green Hell.” The new Combined Jungle Operations Training Course at Base Aeronaval Cristóbal Colón, formerly Fort Sherman, marks a major shift in military training from GWOT/desert combat to a focus on Latin America and the security of the Panama Canal.

The three-week course, launched this year as part of an expanded partnership with Panama, puts Marines, soldiers, and Panamanian forces through some of the harshest terrain on earth—venomous wildlife, dense canopy, and rough conditions that make comms, coordinated movement, and cas evac a nightmare. So far, 46 personnel have graduated...with USSOUTHCOM expected to scale up rotations of platoons through the school next year.

“Unnamed defense officials” have stressed to media outlets that this is not in preparation for ops in Venezuela, but others are pointing to the administration’s focus on countering narcotics flows and pushing back against Chinese influence in the region (specifically the Panama Canal), and overall just presenting a ready force to put pressure on the Maduro regime. And also, getting to Panama is a lot easier/less expensive than flying units to Hawaii and Japan.
