A P-8A Poseidon (the Navy’s standard anti-sub & ISR aircraft) was spotted today (Tuesday 4 Nov) flying a pattern off of Mexico’s Pacific coast near Tijuana—defense analysts speculate the mission may be the first indication of overt U.S. military activity to monitor (target?) Mexican drug cartels.

According to public flight-trackers, the P-8 departed Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington state, flew south along the coast and circled off the coast of Mexico—northern Baja peninsula—flying a series of surveillance-type patterns off of Tijuana south to Ensenada.

The reported sighting comes as the Trump administration signals a potential mission to deploy U.S. troops, drones and intelligence assets into Mexico to target international drug cartels. “Sources” told Pentagon media that preliminary training for the op may have already started—but that no deployment of personnel (“boots on the ground”) is imminent.

Reports indicate that the U.S. could send drones to strike drug production sites and high-value cartel leadership. It’s unknown if this flight is part of these preparations, operational planning, routine ISR or just a training flight.
