The report (🔗 in bio—check it out)—gives examples...like how James Mulvenon of Pamir Consulting is flooded with “sophisticated” LinkedIn requests from attractive Chinese women seeking access to U.S. tech execs—a ‘honeypot’ tactic U.S. spy agencies aren’t able to duplicate—“We don’t do this kind of operation by law or by culture — that gives them an asymmetric advantage,” says Mulvenon.

In modern espionage, spies aren’t wearing black tuxedos and playing cards — they’re tech bros, crypto analysts & “ordinary citizens” that work to cultivate lifelong relationships with targets or orchestrate one-night romps to gain leverage over engineers. In one case, a Russian grad student married an American aerospace engineer in order to work her way into the military-space tech community...playing the loooong spygame.

This covert targeting is all part of Chinese & Russian efforts to undermine U.S. innovation. Beijing has hosted startup “pitch competitions” on U.S. soil, requiring participants to share proprietary business plans (of course, ‘under surveillance’). Winners are then encouraged to relocate their IP to China, effectively trading national innovation for cash.  This type of tech theft costs ~$600 Billion a year.
In another high-profile case, two former Tesla employees tried to sell stolen battery tech for $15 million to undercover agents.
