Well, now we know—the sky is not falling…it wasn’t ‘space debris’ that struck a United flight a few days ago...here’s the backstory: On Thursday, a United Airlines Boeing 737 was forced to divert to Salt Lake City after the captain reported an impact that cracked the cockpit windshield—initially feared to be space debris impacting the aircraft. Photos shared by aviation watcher xJonNYC showed the cracked glass and the captain’s injured arm, fueling speculation that the jet had collided with space debris re-entering the atmosphere or micro-meteorites—some even thought it could have been a small SpaceX satellite.

But investigators figured out the culprit wasn’t extraterrestrial at all—it was likely a WindBorne Systems weather balloon. The California-based firm, known for its high-altitude “Global Sounding Balloons,” later confirmed one of its sensors had struck the jet. WindBorne’s balloons collect atmospheric data to feed their AI-enabled forecasting model, extending weather prediction by as much as 21 days. The company said it complies with all FAA rules, files flight notifications (NOTAMs), and provides real-time position data to industry...but it appears the United flight may have impacted one of the sandbags used to stabilize the balloons as controllers did not deconflict the flight altitudes (that’s the speculation at this point until investigation is complete).
