The U.S. military has seized two survivors following the Thursday strike on a suspected drug-smuggling vessel in the Caribbean — marking the first capture under the expanded counter-narcotics campaign. The strike, confirmed by defense officials, is believed to be the sixth since early September and brings the total death toll from these maritime operations to ~32…and now breaking today are reports of a seventh airstrike.

According to U.S. officials, the semi-submersible craft was believed to be carrying large quantities of fentanyl and other illicit drugs. Two crew members were killed in the attack—but surprisingly, two survivors were rescued by the U.S. Navy and are now being transferred back to their home countries — Colombia & Ecuador — for detention and prosecution.

President Trump announced the transfer this weekend: “The two surviving terrorists are being returned to their countries of origin.” They’ve now been received by local authorities, who confirm they will face legal proceedings (By handing them over, the U.S. avoids complex legal maneuvers related to detaining foreign traffickers/nationals).

The Administration has justified the ongoing strikes by declaring that the U.S. is engaged in an “armed conflict” with drug cartels — invoking the same post-9/11 legal authority once used against terrorist networks. The campaign has included the deployment of destroyers, F-35s (see video of USMC jets in Puerto Rico) and even a nuclear submarine to the Caribbean...now with more than 6,500 service members involved in the operation.
