On Saturday, Lockheed Martin launched a cryptic video warning us not to miss their next announcement...could it be the SR-72? the next-generation F-22? X-59?....Then Sunday, the company revealed its latest project: the Vectis autonomous ‘collaborative combat aircraft’...an all-new platform to integrate as a drone wingman to 5th-generation fighters like the F-35.

Developed by Lockheed’s storied Skunk Works division—the same team behind the SR-71 Blackbird and America’s stealth breakthroughs—Vectis is conceived as a modular, uncrewed aircraft able to perform a range of missions: targeting, electronic warfare, counter-air operations, and intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance.  It’s certainly a cool aircraft—but faces a lot of competition as several other companies have already unveiled their own prototypes.

Lockheed’s renderings show a blended-wing-body fuselage, a single dorsal-mounted intake, and a delta wing profile. Though stealth was not a formal requirement for CCAs, Lockheed emphasizes that Vectis leverages decades of stealth design to achieve “best in class survivability.” The company says Vectis will be offered at a “competitive price point”—likely under $20 million per—making it a relatively affordable wingman for aerial campaigns...all that said, there’s speculation that there may be another ‘big reveal’ in the near future, especially given the odd shapes in the video.
