In a moment seemingly out of a movie—or a ‘you couldn’t make this up’ moment—a hot mic in Beijing revealed a rare glimpse into the private thinking of two world leaders. While walking together with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un during China’s Victory Day parade this week, Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin were overheard discussing biotechnology & organ transplants as a pathway to radically extended life spans.

According to translations relayed through interpreters, Putin suggested modern medicine might make it possible for humans to remain “younger and younger, and even achieve immortality.” Xi’s translator added that some predictions suggest people could live to 150 years old this century. Later, Putin reiterated to local press his belief that advances in recovery methods, surgery, and biotechnology could significantly increase global life expectancy.
