Breaking—The hunt is on...at the moment, the RAF has scrambled spy planes as part of a massive NATO effort to track a suspected Russian submarine that has been ‘shadowing’, ‘monitoring’ or ‘harassing’ (depending on who’s reporting) the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier—the USS Gerald R. Ford—during exercises in Arctic waters this week.

In what defense officials are calling a “highly unusual surge” of activity, NATO allies launched at least 27 anti-submarine sorties over just 48 hours, deploying P-8A Poseidon aircraft equipped with sub-hunting sensors, torpedoes, missiles & sonar buoys. The RAF dispatched eight Poseidons from Scotland, while Norway launched three more flights from deep inside the Arctic Circle. U.S. Navy patrol planes also surged from Iceland and Sicily to reinforce the hunt.

The HMS Somerset, a Royal Navy anti-submarine frigate, joined Norwegian and NATO vessels in the High North. Many aircraft flew “dark” with transponders off to avoid detection as they scoured the Norwegian Sea, including patrols over the GIUK Gap—one of NATO’s most strategic maritime choke points since the Cold War.

Experts suggest the scale of operations signals NATO’s intent: either a Russian submarine has already been located and is being monitored, or the alliance is sending Moscow a sharp warning (“we see you”)...The threat of Russian subs is serious as these elusive platforms are not only formidable weapons, but can also disrupt undersea cables & pipelines vital to global commerce.
