Russia appears to be gearing up for another round of testing its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile—an experimental weapon President Vladimir Putin has described as “invincible” with “unlimited” range.

Intel monitoring through August has revealed a military buildup on Novaya Zemlya, a remote Arctic archipelago. Satellite imagery and flight tracking show an unusual deployment of a Beriev A-50U radar aircraft to Rogachevo air base — suggesting preparations for missile testing. Experts note that the aircraft may be used to monitor test flights and coordinate ops.

Supporting activity has also surged. Transport planes including An-72, An-26, and Il-76 have been spotted, along with two Su-35S fighters. At least eight helicopters are ferrying troops and equipment to Severny and Pankovo, the latter hosting the Burevestnik launch site. Specialized Il-976 SKIP aircraft tied to Rosatom, Russia’s nuclear agency, were also deployed (an aircraft designed to monitor nuclear missile trials).

Warnings to ships and aircraft have reinforced suspicions: Russian NOTAMs and maritime advisories have restricted access west of Novaya Zemlya through late August. Multiple vessels are currently operating in the exclusion zone, some supplying Pankovo and others observing test preparations.
