A 22-year-old active-duty U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to pass national defense information to Russia—specifically sensitive technical data on the M1A2 Abrams tank.

According to federal prosecutors, Taylor Adam Lee—who held a TS/SC clearance—began sharing export-controlled details online this June. He expressed his intent to assist Russia, reportedly stating, “At this point I’d even volunteer to assist the Russian Federation when I’m there in any way.”

Then in July, Lee allegedly handed over an SD card during a meeting with someone he believed to be a Russian intelligence officer. The card contained documents on the M1A2 Abrams and another armored U.S. vehicle, including some material marked as Controlled (sensitive/export controlled, but Unclassified). Later that month, Lee is said to have delivered a physical tank component to a storage unit in El Paso, then messaged his contact: “Mission accomplished.”

This case is especially concerning to prosecutors given the Abrams tanks’ battlefield relevance in Ukraine, where U.S.-donated tanks are in active use. The DOJ noted that Lee sought Russian citizenship in exchange for the information — raising serious counterintelligence alarms as he likely would have continued to pass more info to his Russian contacts in the future.
