The U.S. Air Force wants to blow up a couple of Cybertrucks—literally. According to newly posted government contracting docs, the Air Force is seeking to acquire two Tesla Cybertrucks specifically for live missile fire testing at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Their rationale—Cybertrucks may soon start showing up on the battlefield—and they don’t respond to explosions like your average pickup.

Unlike other vehicles in the Air Force’s 33-target procurement request, the Cybertrucks are the only ones with a brand-specific requirement. The truck’s stainless steel exoskeleton, angular design, and 48V electrical system give the vehicle a durability edge. The Air Force says they “do not receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact”—a detail that matters when training to take out enemy assets under SOCOM’s precision munitions programs.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk once called the Cybertruck “apocalypse-proof.” A somewhat disputed claim...that may not hold up under fire. But it is likely they’ll show up on the battlefield soon—for example, Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov even claimed to have outfitted some with machine guns for the war in Ukraine (before accusing Tesla of remotely disabling them).

Despite 8 recalls & slumping sales—just 10,700 sold this year—the Cybertruck is already being eyed by military and paramilitary groups for its potential as a battlefield platform. Some versions with armor and tactical upgrades are even being marketed to law enforcement and security agencies.
