In just five months, DJI drones could be grounded in the U.S. — not directly by executive order, but simply by default. Under the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act, Chinese-made drones must pass a national security review by Dec. 23, 2025—or face a de facto ban. But DJI says there’s been no sign that review has even started. Already, DJI drones are hard to find in stores, and the DJI entire U.S. online store is “Out of stock.”

While not officially banned, DJI claims U.S. Customs and Border Protection is quietly blocking many of its shipments. The company confirmed it’s struggling to import drones and told customers it remains “committed to the U.S. market”—even as the clock ticks toward the uncertain deadline.

President Trump’s executive orders (several drone-focused exec orders were signed in June) didn’t outright ban DJI, but they ramped up scrutiny and laid the groundwork for broader action against foreign manufacturers, created a federal task force to defend U.S. airspace and directed agencies to prioritize American-made drones.

If the mandated review isn’t completed by December, DJI drones could automatically be added to the FCC’s “Covered List”—prohibiting their sale in the U.S. The company has requested a formal audit and insists its tech is secure, noting that independent assessments and U.S. agencies have validated its systems.

Interestingly, DJI may already be testing a workaround: a “Skyrover X1” drone listed on Amazon appears nearly identical to DJI’s models—same design, nearly the same app… just painted yellow.
