Dramatic video posted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott shows a heroic moment as a Texas DPS helicopter crew airlifts a woman from a tree above the raging Guadalupe River. The rescue came as devastating flash floods swept through the Texas Hill Country, claiming the lives of at least 27 people and leaving dozens missing, including 23 girls from the local Camp Mystic near Kerrville (numbers increasing as of this post).

The Guadalupe River rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes before dawn, triggered by a sudden downpour that overwhelmed local infrastructure and caught many off guard. At one riverside RV park, a young man was found buried in debris with a broken leg. At Camp Mystic, as many as 750 people could have been in attendance (again, numbers continue to fluctuate) when floodwaters rushed in, destroying cabins and washing away parts of the grounds.

Rescue teams have used helicopters, drones, and ropes to pluck victims from trees and rooftops. “Air rescue missions like this are being done around the clock,” said Governor Abbott. “We will not stop until everyone is accounted for.”

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, (currently acting as governor as Gov Abbott is out of state), deployed the Texas National Guard and confirmed more rain is on the way. Officials warn that even light rainfall could worsen the crisis due to saturated terrain.

On the ground, hundreds of responders are aiding search and recovery efforts. Survivors describe clinging to trees, being swept into attics, and enduring terrifying hours in pitch-black floodwaters. A local judge admitted the region had no formal warning system, even though the area—dubbed Flash Flood Alley—is historically flood-prone.
