Israel’s covert war against Iran’s nuclear program took a historic turn this month with the targeted killings of at least 14 top Iranian scientists—including physicists, chemists, and nuclear engineers—described by Israeli officials as the brains behind Iran’s weaponization efforts.

According to Ambassador Joshua Zarka, the unprecedented campaign “basically threw back the program by a number of years.” Nine of the scientists were killed in Israel’s opening wave of strikes on June 13. The most recent death reported: Mohammad Reza Sedighi Saber, who died in a second Israeli strike after surviving an earlier one that killed his 17-year-old son.

Analysts warn, however, that while these strikes have disrupted Iran’s capabilities, they cannot erase decades of nuclear expertise. “Strikes cannot destroy the knowledge Iran has acquired,” said UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
