Tring, 1751: 69-year-old Ruth Osborne was dragged from the workhouse and “swum” in a pond — bound hand to foot, on the belief a witch would float. She drowned. By then witchcraft wasn’t even a crime, and her killer was hanged — yet thousands mourned him, not her.
