In Victorian Britain, working mothers bought Godfrey’s Cordial — a sweet syrup laced with opium — to quiet their babies so they could keep working. Many tried to stop but couldn’t afford to, and drugged infants slipped quietly away.
It was known to kill, and it stayed on sale for a hundred years.
