As autonomous drones become increasingly common, UC Irvine researchers have identified a surprising way to stop them. Using an ordinary umbrella printed with a specially designed graphic pattern, the team demonstrated how autonomous target-tracking drones can be lured off course, trapped in a net or even forced to crash. The findings, which have important implications for border security, law enforcement and personal privacy, were presented at a leading cybersecurity conference earlier this year.
