Giant groundsels are one of the most remarkable examples of plant evolution in extreme environments. Descended from ordinary daisy relatives, they adapted to the freezing alpine slopes of East African mountains and evolved thick trunks that store water and natural antifreeze compounds. Their dead leaves act like insulation, allowing them to survive dramatic temperature swings where it can feel like summer by day and winter by night.
