Selections are based on mission requirements and experience rather than gender. From a statistical perspective, the current astronaut corps includes numerous highly qualified women, making it possible that the astronauts chosen for a future mission could all be women purely by chance. Such an outcome would reflect the composition of the candidate pool and mission needs rather than any predetermined effort to create a crew based on gender.
