FAQ
What is the Social Security tax, and what is its purpose?
The Social Security tax is a tax collected by the government that is entirely separate from your federal income tax. On a typical pay stub, it might appear under labels such as "Social Security," "FICA," or "OASDI". The government collects these funds to help pay for the benefits you will eventually receive upon retirement, as well as to provide financial assistance to individuals who are unable to work. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/general/fica-and-withholding-everything-you-need-to-know/L8Vjhsiel

What is the Social Security tax rate and income limit for 2025?
For the 2025 tax year, the total Social Security tax rate is 12.4%. This percentage applies only to the first $176,100 of your 2025 income.

How much of the Social Security tax do I pay if I am an employee versus self-employed?
How the 12.4% tax is split depends on your employment status:
Employees: If you are an employee, you only pay 6.2% directly out of your paycheck. Your employer is responsible for covering the remaining 6.2%.
Self-Employed Individuals: If you are self-employed, you generally must pay the entire 12.4% tax yourself.

Is there any tax relief available for self-employed individuals paying the full Social Security tax?
Yes. If you are self-employed, you are allowed to deduct half of your Social Security tax amount on your federal income tax return.
For example, if you have $100,000 in self-employment earnings, you will owe 12.4% ($12,400) in Social Security taxes. However, you can subtract half of that amount ($6,200) from the taxable income reported on your Form 1040, which lowers your overall federal income tax bill. https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/self-employment-taxes/the-self-employment-tax/L8xXjolB4
