Long before marine protected areas became a global conservation tool, local communities along Kenya's coast understood the importance of protecting the ocean that sustained them.

More than 50 years after its creation, the Malindi-Watamu-Arabuko Sokoke Biosphere Reserve continues to show what's possible when ocean conservation and community wellbeing go hand in hand. Healthy coral reefs support marine life, attract tourism, and help sustain local economies, while nearby communities continue to play an important role in protecting and stewarding these waters.

As the Our Ocean Conference in Kenya continues this week, places like this offer an important reminder: lasting ocean protection involves working alongside the people who depend on the ocean every day.

Healthy oceans support healthy communities, and when communities are part of the solution, both can thrive.
