The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a 1-year-old was killed by police who shot at the car after responding to a shoplifting call at a Walmart. Nbcnews reports the incident happened Sunday afternoon in Senatobia, Mississippi, about 40 miles south of Memphis.

Authorities say officers attempted to stop a vehicle connected to the call, but claim the driver drove toward officers and nearly hit one of them. An officer then fired into the vehicle. Civil rights attorney #BenCrump says 1-year-old Kohen Wiley was inside the car with his mother and a family friend when he was struck and killed. Crump says Kohen’s mother was not charged with any crime and alleges she tried to tell officers there was a baby inside before shots were fired.

The family friend was reportedly left in critical condition. After the shooting, authorities say the driver went to a nearby hospital, where Kohen was later pronounced dead. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case. Senatobia Police said they are committed to transparency as the investigation continues.
