Linkin Park, Download Festival

LIVE REVIEW: There’s a universe where Linkin Park’s last appearance at Donington Park is forever cemented as 2014.
The fact that the band are back in this legendary field is one thing, but it’s another for them to be doing it as part of a tour that continues to go from strength to emotional strength, carving out exhilarating new layers to their generational legacy.
Before they have even played a note, it feels like a privilege to see them closing out Download for another year. That only intensifies as ‘The Emptiness Machine’ opens proceedings and sends this jam-packed crowd into awe-stricken raptures.
Every corner of the band’s extraordinary journey is covered in gorgeous detail, from the luscious production of ‘The Catalyst’ and buoyant textures of ‘BURN IT DOWN’ to latest heavy hitters ‘Two Faced’ and ‘Up From The Bottom’, every note, melody and bar is delivered with a passion, prowess and pearly white smile from all on stage.
The connection that Mike Shinoda and Emily Armstrong have developed is undeniable, too, the latter delivering these timeless tracks with the sort of rawness and emotional respect that chokes you up, especially during a tear-stained ‘Waiting For The End’ and anthemic ‘Numb’.
And the hits keep on coming, too. ‘Papercut’, ‘Bleed It Out’, ‘What I’ve Done’, ‘Lying From You’. A truly inimitable discography, presented with razor-sharp and rallying intention.
It’s in these moments that it becomes even more abundantly clear than it already was how influential this band have been, and will continue to be within this wondrous community and beyond. To get to celebrate what has been, whilst looking forward with a gratitude and drive to keep these songs and stories alight, is something to be savoured.
The hardest part of ending is starting again, but, as ‘Faint’ closes out this utter spectacle, Linkin Park continue to show that, even when faced with oblivion, anything is truly possible.
