At a quiet meeting Tuesday night, Berkeley City Council took another step toward addressing the city’s financial woes, moving forward with fee hikes for the city’s parking enforcement and the Environmental Health Division’s services, as well as new fees for the city’s zero waste efforts.

Most of the city’s fee hikes — which come as it faces a crippling $30 million city-wide deficit — passed with the full support of council, but they nonetheless drew skepticism from public commenters and council members.

The council — with the exception of District 3 Councilmember Ben Bartlett — ultimately signed off on a host of parking fee increases, expanding metered zones, adding enforcement on Sundays and extending the hours of required payment to 8 p.m. The measures look to address a $1 million deficit faced by the city’s parking enforcement and are poised to generate $5.3 million in additional revenue.
