There’s a quiet luck that doesn’t always get celebrated: having friends with whom you can drop the mask.
Friends with whom emotional depth is normal, not a performance.
With whom you can show vulnerability without fear of being judged, used, or analyzed.

These are spaces where you share honestly, without constantly wondering if someone is evaluating you, will use this against you later, or is trying to gain something.

Today, these spaces feel increasingly rare.
Extreme individualism, the competition to be “unique”, spiritual materialism, the urge to fit an idealized archetype, fear of failure, and the lack of authenticity with ourselves make deep connection difficult—and often avoided.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that these kinds of relationships are getting scarcer… and many people actively avoid them.
Because depth requires admitting what’s there:
the two narratives many carry (the inner and the outer),
the things they’ve done but don’t want to acknowledge,
unhealthy behaviors: emotional abuse, threats, control, repeated harm.

In men, this kind of honesty is especially rare.

There’s an epidemic of loneliness: people don’t talk about their emotions because they fear exposing themselves,
and because they fear facing the person in front of the mirror—
and seeing that they’ve been the very type of person they criticize from the outside.

Having someone—man or woman—with whom you can be completely honest,
and talk about everything:
from “what’s the best Slayer album?”
to the pain your parents’ breakup caused you,
or how you reacted during a fight with your partner,
is extremely valuable.

It’s not normal.
It’s not easy.
But it’s one of the richest things in life.

If you have someone like that, or you’re trying to build that kind of space:
don’t lose it.
Don’t lower the bar.
It’s an emotional luxury.
