🚀✈️ What happens when a rocket launch & a commercial flight need the same sky?

As space launches and re-entries become more frequent, this is no longer a rare question. Every launch or re-entry can require airspace to close, affecting flight routes, airline operations, passengers and space missions alike.

📖That is why UNOOSA just published a new issues brief to inform the space community of this issue: “Challenges and Opportunities of Airspace Integration for Space Transportation Operations.”

It outlines why the current reliance on ad hoc airspace closures is becoming harder to sustain, and why stronger international cooperation, greater transparency, harmonized practices and practical coordination between aviation and space authorities are increasingly needed.

🚧 With over 315 successful launches in 2025 alone, what was once exceptional is becoming routine. The stakes are high: delays and rerouting for aviation, increased fuel burn and network disruption, missed orbital windows for space operators, and growing questions of fairness, efficiency and safety for all users of airspace.

🤝This week in Vienna, on the margins of #COPUOS2026, the ICAO Space Operations Task Force was launched to advance this work, bringing together aviation and space communities to discuss how launch and re-entry operations can be safely and efficiently integrated into airspace systems.

Because the future is not about choosing between rockets and planes. It is about making sure both can operate safely, efficiently and fairly in the same shared sky.
