The last book to be published during his lifetime, this catalogue focuses on Jannis Kounellis’s very first works – the ‘Alfabeto’ series, offering an in-depth appraisal of his artistic development through a reconsideration of early masterpieces.⁠

A leading figure of the Arte Povera movement, Kounellis began his career painting letters, numbers and urban signs drawn from the streets of Rome – works which launched his material and conceptual explorations of space, structure and rhythm.⁠

In this publication, an essay by acclaimed Italian art historian, critic and curator Germano Celant, who coined the term ‘Arte Povera’ in 1967, traces the radical visual language that would define Kounellis’s career. Meanwhile, curator and academic Flavia Frigeri’s specially commissioned essay considers the cultural and political context that gave rise to the artist’s earliest works.⁠
