TWICE THE PRIDE - EPISODE 5: RICKY MARTIN 🏳️‍🌈🇵🇷By the time ricky_martin came out publicly in 2010, he had already spent decades as one of the most recognizable entertainers in the world.

From his early days with Menudo to becoming an international superstar with hits like “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Ricky helped bring Latin music into the mainstream and paved the way for countless artists who followed.

But for years, his personal life was the subject of constant speculation and scrutiny. In an era when openly LGBTQ+ representation was far less common—especially for Latino men in mainstream entertainment—many people questioned whether coming out could damage a career of that magnitude.

Instead, Ricky chose authenticity.

In March 2010, he publicly came out as a gay man, writing that he was “fortunate to be who I am.” The announcement became a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ visibility, particularly within the Latino community, where conversations around sexuality and masculinity have often been shaped by cultural expectations and stereotypes.

Since then, Ricky has continued to use his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, marriage equality, and the dignity of queer families. He’s also spoken openly about fatherhood and raising his children with pride and authenticity.

Personal side note: In 2022, Ricky and I were both included on Queerty’s Queer 50 list. Seeing my name anywhere near his felt surreal. But it was also a reminder of something Ricky’s career has demonstrated for decades: visibility matters.

When people live openly, they make it easier for someone else to do the same.
