Did you know Tibetan Buddhists celebrate a holiday dedicated to Ganesha?

Today, Tibetan Buddhists celebrate Gyalphur Drubjor, a twice-yearly holiday associated with Ganesha (or Ganapati), the elephant-headed deity linked to wisdom, abundance, and the removal of obstacles. According to tradition, on this day Ganesha appears to those who revere him, bestowing blessings of prosperity and good fortune.

Gyalphur Drubjor is considered an auspicious time of "perfect alignment" when the constellation Cancer aligns with a Thursday, the day associated with Jupiter. In Tibetan astrology, Cancer is believed to amplify Jupiter's qualities of expansion, abundance, and wisdom.

This Tibetan Buddhist painting from our collection depicts the red, 12-armed Ganapati in a dynamic dancing posture. His red color connects him to the lotus family of Buddhist deities associated with attraction and magnetism.
