The golf world is moving away from the 4 iron. Should you do the same? 👀  20 years ago, almost every golfer carried a 4 iron. Today, they're becoming increasingly rare. So what happened to the 4 iron, and should you still have one in your golf bag? The decline of the 4 iron comes down to two major changes in modern golf equipment: ⛳ Loft jacking – Manufacturers strengthened iron lofts, meaning today's 5 irons often go as far as older 4 irons. ⛳ The rise of hybrids – Golfers discovered they could get the same distance as a 4 iron with a higher launch, more forgiveness, and greater consistency. As a result, many manufacturers stopped including 4 irons in their standard iron sets, and golfers started replacing them with hybrids. In fact, only around 20% of LPGA Tour players now carry a traditional 4 iron, with most opting for higher-launching alternatives instead. Should you use a 4 iron? If you're a strong ball striker who prefers a lower ball flight, a 4 iron can still be a fantastic club. But for most golfers, a hybrid will be easier to hit, more forgiving, and help achieve the same distance with less effort. That's why the 4 iron is becoming less common in the modern game.
