ICYMI: Here’s why we’re suing to stop the transfer of 715 acres of National Wildlife Refuge land to spacex.

Our lawsuit alleges that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service violated the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 by allowing this land trade, which will permanently reduce and degrade the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge in south Texas. 

The usfws decided to give these lands to SpaceX in exchange for fewer acres of private lands, most of which will be added to a separate wildlife refuge.

The Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge protects some of the best remaining habitat in the United States for the endangered ocelot. It also hosts vulnerable migratory birds such as piping plovers, Wilson’s plovers, red knots, and black skimmers.

The land deal is one of the largest exchanges of land in the refuge system’s history outside the state of Alaska, and we’re pursuing all the legal action we can to stop it.
