#SaturdayStorytime - Wanna Cyber?
In honor of wrapping up online semis let’s talk about another unique online competition: the 2020 Rogue invitational.
It was Covid and there wasn’t much competition going on, rogueinvitational swooped in and saved the day in impressive fashion. Not many people got to experience this so I’ll try to recap some important details. It was a logistical masterpiece.
To ensure standardization Rogue sent us all the equipment we needed. This was crazy. They sent it well in advance and had us run and inventory and set up floor plans. At the time I was living on Vancouver island so obviously my shipment was delayed and showed up 2 days before the comp. Had me sweating before we even started.
We had an approved judge sent to us and had to have a “controller” for the event. Someone to manage our feed, do rep counts and correspond with the rogue team throughout. We got floor plans approved before competition Then it was game on!
The competition took place on central time which was a big North American advantage if I’m being honest. I had to start early but The Australians and some Europeans got hosed.
A unique part of this competition was that we got to do it in our gym and as long as they were off camera people could come watch and get pretty close. We also were not allowed to have any music to disrupt audio and only cheering at approved times so it was spooky quiet when we competed. Nothing but the sounds of feet, weights and heavy breathing. You could practically hear my heartbeat. I remember after the first day my parents telling me how shocking it was to hear me breathing. Apparently it looks much easier from far away but standing right next to it is uncomfortable 😂.
We couldnt see our competitors so Behind the scenes we tried gain any advantage we could. During the C+J event my wife had a white board and slowly crossed names off as they missed. In the chipper she silently updated me on the field the same way. The feed was on about a 1 min delay so it couldn’t save me from an extra round on the death by power snatch 💀.
It was one of my best complete performances ever so I look back fondly, but I hope we never have to do it again 😂.
