I use AI every day at work. But these are three ways I see people use it that immediately hurt their credibility.

1️⃣ Your emails obviously sound like AI wrote them.

Everyone knows the tells now. The overly formal language, the unnecessary filler, and the paragraph that somehow says nothing in a very polished way. When someone senior gets an email that clearly doesn’t sound like you, it doesn’t come across as efficient. It comes across like you didn’t care enough to write it yourself.

Write the rough version yourself, then use AI to make it clearer or more concise without changing your voice.

2️⃣ You trust the output without checking it.

AI will confidently give you the wrong answer. If you paste that straight into your work, you’re the one sending bad numbers up the chain with your name on them. The tool doesn’t get blamed. You do.

Use it to get to an answer faster, but always check the numbers, assumptions, and original sources yourself.

3️⃣ You let it do the thinking for you.

AI is great for grunt work. But if you get asked one follow-up question in a meeting and can’t explain your own analysis, people are going to start questioning everything else you send them.

Use it to organize information, pressure-test your thinking, or point out what you may have missed, but make sure the actual conclusion is yours.

The people who look smart using AI use it like a calculator. The people who get clocked use it like a ghostwriter.
