The Pacific Islands are the birthplace of Polynesian wayfinding, an ancient tradition of sailing that connects island communities across thousands of miles of open ocean navigating using only the stars, the sun and the sea.

Moananuiākea, a multi-year circumnavigation of the Pacific Ocean, is continuing this tradition. As part of this larger voyage, #NatGeoExplorer Lehua Kamalu captained and navigated an expedition from the Cook Islands to New Zealand. Together with HokuleaCrew, she is devising ways to bridge traditional wayfinding with cutting-edge technology to gauge challenges facing the Pacific Ocean. Observational and deep sea data gathered during their voyages will inform vital conservation efforts.

This work is part of the National Geographic and Rolex #PerpetualPlanet Ocean Expeditions.
