RECAP! 12 weeks ago I started a training block with a friend and impressive athlete, ratt.fitness for the Portland Half. Four runs a week, workouts, long runs, and a goal of running a PR & beat 1:55:30.

About a month before Portland, I decided to sign up for the Wells Half Marathon. It’s known for being flat and fast, and I ended up running a 1:50:57 (💅🏼)

A month later came Portland. They reversed the course this year, which I was actually excited about because it felt like a new challenge. The training was there, but looking back, I don’t think I approached the race as strategically as I could have. I was given proper workouts & training runs but didn’t execute them. There was a long climb early on that absolutely cooked my legs. I’ve never experienced that feeling before, my legs felt so dense and heavy for almost the entire race.

I finished in 1:56:24 slower than I ran Portland last year. Totally ok with that. I’m so competitive but times aren’t everything.

This training block gave me a PR, two half marathons in a month, and a lot of information about where I can improve. Not every race is meant to validate your fitness. Sometimes they’re there to teach you something

A few things I’m taking into NYC Marathon training:

• Strength training needs to become non-negotiable. I did it, but not consistently enough. NYC hills are going to expose that FOR SUREEE

• Fueling. I high key need to build a grocery list and routine that actually supports my training instead of trying to figure it out week by week

• Consistency with tracking. I got the runs done, but I didn’t upload or communicate as much data as I should have. That’s on me, and it’s something I’ll improve

• Mindset. Learning how to stay positive when things don’t go according to plan and understanding that one race doesn’t define a training cycle

YIPPPEEEEE ONTO NYC!!!! 🤸🏼‍♀️🧡💚 #nycmarathon#RattFitness#runrichrunclub
